Dr. Maxine R. Gilvey, DVM
Veterinarian, Practice Owner
DR. MAXINE GILVEY attended Northeastern University, obtained an animal science degree from North Carolina State University and graduated from NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. She is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS) and has extensive experience and training in advanced ultrasound, advanced dentistry, and laser surgery. She also has particular interest in preventive care, nutrition, pain management, and therapy laser.
Dr. Gilvey’s time outside the animal hospital includes her work as a volunteer for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Ride for Kids, an annual motorcycle charity event that she introduced in eastern North Carolina. She and her husband, Rod, live in Apex and enjoy riding their motorcycles and time at the beach. She currently enjoys the company of Blaze, a Shetland Sheepdog, and Daisy May, a retired Himalayan show cat. She has two adult children and two grandsons.
Dr. Katie Smith, DVM
Dr. Katie Smith originally is from Rochester, NY. She moved to NC in 1993 and graduated from NCState College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. She joins the Parkway Animal Hospital staff subsequent to providing relief veterinary services at a number of area hospitals. Her interests include feline medicine, surgery, and behavior, disaster and rescue medicine, and overpopulation control via feral cat trap/neuter/release and general spay/neuter. Katie and her husband Glen live in Cary with their two daughters and a myriad of cats. When not working, Katie enjoys being with her family, hula hooping, and an occasional geocache.
Dr. Rachel Davis
Dr. Rachel Davis is originally from the Chicago suburbs. She moved to North Carolina from Maryland in 1997 and graduated from NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. Since graduation, she has worked in small animal practice in Chatham county. Her interests include client education, pain management, dentistry, soft tissue surgery, and wound care.
Rachel and her husband, Clark, live in Cary with their daughter, their dog Edie, and two cats, Sid and Pygmonkey. In her free time, Rachel enjoys swimming, reading, knitting and sewing.
Dr. Naomi B. Barnea, DVM
DR. NAOMI B. BARNEA originally hails from Denver, Colorado. She later grew up in Baltimore, Maryland where she attended Towson State University and University of Maryland Baltimore County and received both a Bachelors of Arts and a Bachelors of Social Work. She later did her veterinary education at the University of Missouri-at- Columbia and graduated in 1988. She then moved to Sanford, NC to practice small animal medicine. Dr. Barnea became an associate veterinarian, working part-time, at Parkway Animal Hospital in 1996, while also has worked at Labcorp and Novartis.
Dr. Barnea’s interests include animal behavior and preventive medicine.
She is a member of The American Veterinary Medical Association, and The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association.
Nycki, RVT – Head Tech & Office Manager
Nycki is a (licensed) Registered Veterinary Technician. She joined our medical staff in 2009 and has been the Lead Technician at Parkway since 2013.She is a North Carolina native and is currently finishing her bachelor’s in Veterinary Technology having graduated from Central Carolina Community College in 2008. She resides in Fuquay-Varina with her Husband, 2 children, Presley and Jackson,; four cats; a new Pomeranian, Princess LuLu, and two Papillion’s, Fonize and Priscilla. Her special Interests include Animal Behavior and Veterinary Dentistry. Nycki spends her free time feeding stray cats from around her neighborhood while relaxing with her family and time spent at the fish pond.
Jill – Senior Veterinary Assistant
Jill is the Senior Veterinary Assistant at Parkway. She came to us with over 15+ years in the industry, after transitioning her experience and education from human medicine, of 6 years, to the veterinary field. She has 8 years of experience in Large Animal, Mobile and Farm medicine, while living in Texas. She has experience with all animals and loves them equally. Jill lives with three cats Fisher, McKenzie, and BC (the oldest, BC, is 21 years old). Winslow, a 3yr old Yorkshire Terrier, is pictured on WRAL and Parkway’s Facebook page. Winslow also won an award at the 2014 International Veterinary Conference. Jill’s special interests include Surgery and Dentistry. In her free time she enjoys motorcycle rides, fishing and cooking. She holds a culinary arts degree. “Until you have loved a pet, your soul is not complete”
Rachel M – Veterinary Assistant
Veterinary Assistant with over 6 years experience and has been at Parkway since 2010. She moved to Raleigh from Southport, NC to attend N.C. State University for her Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology. She is currently working on Associates in Veterinary Technology to qualify to take the State Boards to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. Her special interests include Radiology and Dentistry. Rachel also volunteers with a TNR (trap-neuter-release) feral cat program named Catnip. She enjoys spending time with her family at the beach and with her two cats, Vito and Cashew. Rachel loves all animals but is particularly fond of felines. Having “grumpy” kitties has helped, in general, with the handling and patience needed for cats in the hospital setting. Prior to moving to Raleigh she rehabilitated a blue jay and baby possum while working under the license of a colleague. When able she enjoys Scuba Diving, Wakeboarding and Ice skating.

Kate – Veterinary Assistant
She is currently a senior studying Animal Science at N.C. State University and will be applying to the College of Veterinary Medicine in the Fall. Kate moved to Raleigh from Dover, Delaware and has experience ranging in large animal husbandry, mobile veterinary practices and emergency medicine. She is a loving owner of a dachshund puppy named Finley (named after Carter Finley Stadium). Kate’s special interests include instructing animal behavior modification classes and coaching girls’ lacrosse.

There’s nothing better than being able to help animals as a veterinary technician and I can’t wait to one day become a veterinarian myself.”
Nicole – Veterinary Assistant
Nicole relocated to Raleigh from Philadelphia, Pa. and first joined Parkway Animal Hospital as a Customer Service Representative. She completed Veterinary Assistant courses, as well as volunteered at the Woman’s Humane Society during her time in Philadelphia and is currently pursuing her degree in Veterinary Technology. Nicole is a proud mommy of two Pembroke Welsh Corgis named Brody and Beatrix. She also spends her time fostering turtles for NC State Veterinary School. Nicole also has a passion for health and fitness. She is a professional competitive bodybuilder and enjoys going to competitions in her free time.
Kayla – Veterinary Assistant
Kayla recently relocated to North Carolina from the Forgotten Coast of Florida. She is a mother of two Brussels Griffon/Pomeranian mixes named Bonnie and Clyde, an English Sheppard named Norman, and a cat named Pickles. Kayla is an advocate for animal rights and has been a vegetarian since she was 15 and vegan for 2 years. She also has a passion for the arts and works as a freelance makeup artist in her free time.
Erynn – Kennel Technician/Veterinary Assistant
She is currently a sophomore at NC State University studying Animal Science and pursuing dreams of someday becoming a veterinarian. Erynn is the proud owner of a Yorkshire Terrier named Molly and grew up in Cary with a passion for animals and nature. Her experience includes working in a mobile veterinary practice as well as the Friends of Felines spay and neuter clinic in Hatteras, NC. Erynn hopes to gain further large animal experience volunteering at the NCSU Equine Unit starting this fall. Her special interests outside the hospital include playing soccer and guitar.
Mandy – Kennel Technician/Veterinary Assistant
Mandy moved to Raleigh from Southern Maryland three years ago to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from N.C. State University. She loves all animals, and has grown up around everything from horses to hamsters. Mandy currently lives in Raleigh, though hopes to move to the West Coast in the future. She is also an avid fitness enthusiast and enjoys many outdoor adventures with her fur baby, Miley, an 8 month old American Staffordshire Terrier Mix.
Rebecca – Receptionist
Rebecca is a member of our Customer Service team with a long history of working with animals. From a young age she worked with horses and is now a trainer and instructor. Rebecca is a proud mommy of a one-eyed paint horse named Cheyenne, and a Jack Russell/Lab mix named Lucy. In her free time she is an avid reader and loves photography.
Wynne – Receptionist
Wynne recently relocated to Cary from Newark Delaware.
She has over 20 years experience in customer service and has worked as a veterinary receptionist here since March 2016. She previously worked at a 24 hour vet practice in Princeton, New Jersey.
She lives in Cary with her husband and 8 cats. Her favorite breed of cat is anything with a squishy face, mainly Persians and Himalayans. Older cats are her favorite.
On the weekends she enjoys traveling with her husband, cooking, working out and spending time with her animals. She enjoys watching the animal planet and learning about cat behavior as many of her favorite kitties are the grumpy ones!
Haily – Receptionist
Haily has 4 years of veterinary experience. She has worked as a kennel technician, veterinary assistant and has joined our team in the receptionist position. Haily is currently working towards her associates degree in business administration at Central Carolina Community College. With that degree and a hopeful bachelors degree, she plans to open up her own dog daycare and grooming facility in the mountains of NC. She has 3 dogs (a black lab, retriever mix and basset hound), a cat and 5 guinea pigs. In her free time she enjoys trying new restaurants around the area, walking around Lake Wheeler with one of the dogs and catching up on her favorite shows on Netflix.
Debbie – Groomer
Debbie has been grooming over 15 years and joined Parkway over 10 years ago. Debbie has 2 beautiful children and a Jack Russell Terrier named Toby. She enjoys spending time with her husband going to local shows
